College and Driving!?!?!?

When am I suppose to be freaking out....and when am I suppose to be calm?? Amanda has hit us with a double whammy this summer. I must admit...it is an odd feeling. On one side it is soooo exciting and on the other side...it's down right scrary!! I'm getting an appointment with my hair stylist this week so she can color my grey hairs!!!

Amanda's going to college!!! At the end of the school year, Amanda sat down with her counselor and discovered that next year she would not be able to take her Spanish and Health class because she's taking seminary. She proudly told her counselor that there is absolutely NO WAY she's giving up seminary. So, the counselor told her, "Well, there is another option....you can take a course at the local community college and it will count toward a high school credit also." She had to get a written letter from her counselor and the principle and then we started the application process. Because she is under-age, she had to take a placement test. Of course she ACED it!! In fact, after the test, the lady looked at her scores and said, "WOW! You did REALLY well!!" Here's an example....she needed to get a score of 60 on the math section and Amanda scored a 112...That's my girl!! I am so proud of her. The hard part though is that the class she is taking is downtown Hillsboro right across from the county jail and courthouse. OH MY!!! And, community college doesn't tend to hold the same standards as my beloved BYU.....not so clean cut and some smell like alchohol and smoke. I also am praying that no guys try to hit on her....I tried to help her know what to do...she's just so young!!!

Here she is with her PCC student card.....and yes,.......it's a DRIVING permit!! Holy Toledo....she is driving!! As Bob would say, "People should stay off the sidewalks now!!" I let her drive home (on the back streets and then I took over on the major streets). She HATED it and says over and over that she does not want to drive. I actually don't understand this....I LOVED to drive and was in line the very second I could to get my permit and license. I guess I overwhelmed her...ha!...Oh well :)

Holy Toledo is right!! Wow, what an awesome score on her math. Amanda makes a great impression wherever she goes. Jami was telling me that when she visited girls camp, she heard several girls talk about how they all wanted to hang around Amanda because she's so fun and positive. She's got her own little wannbe's! Be glad she doesn't want to drive... we're trying to log in Travis' 500 hours (so far it's at 3 hours and counting) and sometimes it's downright SCARY!!

Amanda is growing up too fast! College and driving...doesn't that seem a little out of order (ha ha). Good for her, I am curious to hear how her "college" experience is. She is SO smart. By the end of the semester she will probably be teaching the class :). Even though I think she is growing up way too fast, she sure is beautiful. She is looking older...I would keep my eyes on those boys. I can't wait for updates. Oh, I also hated to drive. I didn't get my license until I was almost 17...crazy I know. Something about driving stressed me out, I didn't enjoy the freedom like all my other friends. She'll come around.

I'm not even ready for her to start driving and dating yet! Because she is so amazing - she is going to get snagged so fast! Oh Julie - they really do grow up so fast! I am so happy to hear how successful she is at math and proud to hear about her decision to take seminary! Way to go!

Ok now I feel old...how do cute little kids grow into collage ID holding teenagers? That is great she is awesome at test taking...takes away half the stress of collage. Way to go to stick with seminary. The notion of downtown Hillsboro makes me laugh Julie. Portland has way scarier sections. You do remember when Portland States students were lobbying to have the homeless people live on their campus? Right? I so miss watching the news in Oregon...the 90 year old men chained to trees just doesn't happen here. She will be safe, no worry. Then again when my mom saw Jeff and my condo in Oregon she was nearly in tears because she thought her baby girl was living in the slums. The grafity painted elementary school on TV highway didn't help. I was so proud of myself owning something in graduate school and she I think was putting our names on the temple prayer roll every week.

That girl is just the best. Don't worry, I was in tears the first time out with my mom too. I think it's too much estrogen mixed with an already stressful situation. Send her out with Dad. She'll be fine after once or twice :). "College" will be great... don't worry, people survive outside BYU, especially girls with Amanda's sense of self! :)

Way to go Amanda! We are so proud of you. Wow! I am continually impressed by how involved you are, how well you stand up for your values, and what a great example you are. I am so glad my kiddos have you for a cousin to look up to. Keep up the amazing work.

How did you get the last post to show under the blog site? I know Jamie's has it too...but considering she's unpacking I am bothering you. Blogging keeps getting easier and easier to keep in touch. It would save even more time seeing the last post.

Thanks
